Chandelier Hanging Guide
Hanging a chandelier is an easy five step process.
Step 1: Planning
In the planning stage of hanging a chandelier, two factors must be considered:
- The size, shape, and feel of the area or room you will be lighting.
- The dimensions and style of the chandelier you will be using as your lighting fixture.
The room and placement of your new chandelier is just as important as the actual fixture you choose. Be sure to select a position that is:
- At least two feet in distance from all walls.
- More than two feet from any objects underneath the bottom of the light fixture.
- Approximately one foot narrower than the table or counter it will brighten.
Step 2: Prepare your Area for Installation
Installing a chandelier is surprisingly easier than it looks. The actual installation process involves positioning and powering the lighting fixture.
The first step in installing a chandelier is to turn off the power running through the lighting fixture. Working on a live wire is extremely dangerous, and should never be done.
Once you are sure there is no electricity flowing through the circuit, it’s time to begin the installation process. Mark the exact spot where you would like to place the chandelier.
Step 3: Install the Ceiling Support and Electrical Box
Use your predefined marking to install the ceiling support and electrical box. While not all chandeliers require a ceiling support, it is highly recommended to use one anyways for a safe, secure lighting set-up. When shopping for a ceiling support, make sure to use one that will adequately carry the weight of the light fixture you chose.
To power your chandelier, you will need to knock out your old electrical box. Install the new box for your light fixture with the U-bolt and brace.
Step 4: Mount the Chandelier
The chandelier itself attaches to the ceiling via a mounting bracket. Attach this bracket to the chandelier and proceed to connect the necessary wires. Many chandeliers are wired differently, so consult the manufacturer’s guide that came with your light fixture for proper instructions on how to wire your chandelier. This process is usually easy, but if you run into any questions or difficulties always contact a professional, qualified electrician.
Step 5: Enjoy!
Chandeliers are a great way to brighten up and add style to any room. Enjoy your new lighting!
